Sweet brown sugar, warm spices, and bold espresso come together to create the perfect drink when paired with oat milk. It's a fantastic beverage, and it is pretty much all I ever drink these days.
For those who know me, I am one of the biggest coffee drinkers. I check out just about every coffee shop I come across. I especially make it my mission while traveling. Can we claim "Coffee Shop Exploring" as an official hobby? Cause, that would be fantastic to add to my resume or something.
I adore it. I love finding coffee shops, checking out what kinds of coffees they offer, seeing their fun seasonal flavors and signature combinations, and seeing if they happen to roast their own coffee. It's a full on experience that is relaxing to me. Most coffee shops are peaceful to me, and I find that's why I love them.
I love trying their signature drinks, even if it's slightly out of my comfort zone. I've had some really delicious and interesting ones like, Cardamom Rose, Peaches and Cream, Lavender Honey, Pistachio, S'mores, White Chocolate Strawberry Rose, and many others. But, as far as my usual order - I always go for a Brown Sugar or a Brown Sugar Cinnamon, and this Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso is my holy grail order. Now that I can make it exactly how I like it every single time, I have zero need to go to Starbucks anymore. So, my wallet and husband are happy about that.
However, a lot of them are just too sweet for me. I want to still be able to taste coffee, have a touch of sweetness to knock any bitterness, and not have an overpowering amount of milk. So, when they released their "Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso," I just about lost my mind. I knew that if they ever took it off of their menu, I would begin a protest or something. It was too perfect for them to get rid of. Thankfully, millions of other coffee lovers agreed with me, and Starbucks swore to keep it on their menu.
It was finally the ONLY drink I could order from their menu, without any adjustments, that I loved. It was my favorite of all time.
So, I decided that I could totally make this at home. and, I actually started making this at home, way before everyone else hopped on the trend. Believe it or not. It's stupid easy.
Ingredients You'll Need to Make this Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso Recipe:
- Brown Sugar
- Water
- Cinnamon Stick
- Star Anise, optional: I love the added flavor that the Star Anise adds, but if you don't have it or do not like the flavor of it, feel free to skip it.
- Salt
- Espresso
- Cinnamon
- Oatmilk
A lot of people are simply adding just brown sugar and cinnamon to their hot espresso, shaking it, and then topping it off with milk. But, that is not actually how Starbucks makes theirs. They use a brown sugar syrup, and I've found that's the most delicious way to make it - even if it adds a few extra steps.
Below is how I make my Shaken Espresso Coffee Drinks.
The Steps to Make a Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso Drink:
1. Make a brown sugar cinnamon simple syrup.
2. Brew two shots of espresso, or really strong coffee.
3. Combine brown sugar syrup, espresso, ice, and cinnamon in a cocktail shaker, mason jar with lid, or other lidded container. Shake until frothy.
4. Pour into a glass with more ice and top with oatmilk, or the milk of your choice.
5. Enjoy this fabulous drink. It's a keeper recipe.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Combine the brown sugar, water, cinnamon sticks, star anise (if using), and pinch of salt in a saucepan.
- Bring to boil, reduce to simmer, and stir occasionally until all sugar has been dissolved.
- Remove from heat, let cinnamon sticks and star anise steep in the syrup for 5-10 minutes. Once steeped, remove sticks and star anise.
- Transfer syrup to a container, jar, or squeeze bottle and store in the refrigerator until you're ready to use it.
- Combine the brown sugar, espresso, and ice in a cocktail shaker, mason jar with lid, or other lidded container. Shake until foamy.
- Add to a glass with more ice.
- Top with oatmilk, or another milk of your choice. Give it a stir and enjoy!
Notes
- You may adjust the sweetness and amount of milk in your drink to your personal preference. Just play around with it. I personally prefer less syrup, but make it perfect for your taste!
- Using Star Anise in your Brown Sugar Syrup is absolutely optional. I like how it adds something different to the syrup. It adds a bit more depth, and I love that. However, some people don't love the flavor of Star Anise - so, no harm if you're not a fan. Just skip it!
- For best results, I love to use a full fat Oatmilk in my coffee drinks. However, you can use whatever you have on hand or prefer. I love the Silk Extra Creamy, Full Fat Oatmilk - if you're looking for a good one to try.
